Pennies for Puppies Reading & Writing Program |
|

In 2017, the Newport News Police Foundation began a pilot program with Hidenwood Elementary School in Newport News. Designed to foster reading and writing skills through a pen pal relationship with members of the Newport News Police Department K-9 Unit. Students write letters to a K-9, adopted by their class. Members of the K-9 Unit visit the school, reading books to the students and bringing letters "written" by their four-legged partners. The result is a wildly successful program that has students practicing their penmanship more frequently, and reading books to the visiting K-9s. In a way that can only be conveyed through the bonds of unconditional love with an animal, the students foster mutual respect and friendships with officers and their K-9 partners. Students collect pennies for the Police Foundation's K-9 health fund, and learn, early on, to give back to their community.
